Midland Asphalt Materials Inc.
A History: 1938 to Present

Midland Asphalt was established in December of 1938. The primary office was located in Buffalo, New York with storage and plant facilities in the nearby city of North Tonawanda. The company provided liquid asphalt products and application services for highway construction and maintenance to local municipalities.

Within two years, Midland acquired storage facilities in Binghamton, Rochester, and Troy, NY. The late forty’s brought the purchase of a permanent, coal-fired storage facility with rail siding in North Tonawanda. By 1953, expansion required building a new repair garage, business office, and product storage area in nearby Tonawanda, NY.

In 1961, Midland re-organized under new ownership to become Midland Asphalt Corporation. A new electronically heated storage facility and dispatch office in Victor, NY helped to expand marketing coverage from four counties to ten. The Tonawanda location expanded in 1968 by adding an asphalt emulsion production plant. Production commenced on a full line of paving grade emulsions, both anionic and cationic. Soon after, Midland acquired Independent Asphalt.

Meanwhile, Chevron Asphalt in Lyons, NY provided liquid product for the Victor operation. In 1983, the purchase of The Krantz Asphalt Co. occurred. Midland continues to operate this Buffalo facility as a distribution center.

A sales office and equipment facilities were opened in Celeron, NY in 1992. The subsequent year, Midland Asphalt Corporation and Penn Can Road Materials, Inc. created a co-company – Lyons Asphalt Products Co., LLC – at the former Chevron Asphalt plant in Lyons. The Midland/ Penn Can joint venture re-activated the facilities after a two season “shut down” by Chevron.

Midland purchased the assets of Alle-Catt Asphalt Co. in 1998 with facilities in Allegany, NY. In February of 2000, Barrett Paving Materials, Inc. acquired Midland which then became Midland Asphalt Materials Inc. Midland continues to supply liquid asphalt, asphalt emulsions, and related products and services necessary for highway construction and maintenance in New York State and northern Pennsylvania as well as specialized process throughout North America.
