A good use for a penny!NOVACHIP® was developed in the late 1980's and it was first introduced to the United States in 1992. Now, annually over 3 million square yards of NOVACHIP® are applied in New York State alone.

NOVACHIP® is an ultrathin, bonded, gap-graded wearing course placed by a specialized machine in one pass. For the best results, FiberMat® should first be applied, followed by NOVACHIP®. This will ensure that any underlying cracks will be addressed, thereby preserving the NOVACHIP® layer.

The process is applied using a self-priming paver. This exclusive pavement process applies an ultrathin, gap-graded hot mix wearing course over a polymer rich asphalt emulsion. The process rapidly secures the NOVACHIP® to the existing surface and allows for minimal traffic delays.

Increase service life, reduce disruption, use resources wisely with NovaChip®

Process:

Similar to hot mix paving but with the addition of an emulsion tank. The process involves spraying a heavy layer of polymer modified asphalt emulsion. Within inches of the first step, an ultrathin gap-graded hot mix asphalt is applied. This can be placed as thin as 0.5 inches (12.5 mm) to 1.5 inches (38 mm) thick. The emulsion cools quickly and bonds the asphalt to the pavement rapidly. Compaction is the final step in this process. The newly paver placed surface treatment can be reopened to traffic within 100 meters of compaction completion. Because the process is less time consuming and requires no milling, the costs of construction are lower as well.

Uses:

  • Can be applied to asphalt or concrete surfaces with structurally sound bases
  • Wearing course layer on reconstructing, rehabilitating, and resurfacing projects
  • Can be used within range of techniques
  • Improves skid resistance
  • Decreases backspray/increases visibility in wet weather

Benefits:

  • Improves skid resistance on difficult, accident-prone areas.
  • Fast application process
  • Open to traffic in minutes
  • Reduces noise and hydroplaning
  • Bonds well to concrete and asphalt
  • Economical
  • Perfect for all traffic volumes
  • No milling necessary
